What is Alternate Picking and Why is it so Important?
Alternate picking is picking up strokes and downstrokes.
The reason it is important to learn alternate picking is it will allow you to play faster and you will only have to work half as hard as if you only used downstrokes.
What is an easy way to learn and improve alternate picking?
Here is a very simple yet incredibly effective exercise to improve alternate picking. Make sure to do this exercise slowly and evenly.
Start by placing your index finger at the 7th Fret on the A string.
Now simply pick 8 times
Now place your second finger on the 8th fret (A string) and pick 8 times
Now place your Third finger on the 9th fret (A string) and pick 8 times
Now place your Pinky finger on the 10th fret (A string) and pick 8 times
Now place your third finger on the 9th fret (A string) and pick 8 times
Now place your second finger on the 8th fret (A string) and pick 8 times
Now place your index finger on the 7th fret (A string) and pick 8 times
Repeat this a couple of times.
Now move to the D string and repeat
Now move to the G string and repeat
Now move to the B string and repeat
Now move to the E string and repeat
This will give your picking hand a good work out.
Remember to work slowly on this so that each pick, up and down feel and sound the same.
