Guidelines for Hotmail and Yahoo mail users for receipt of my Newsletter, and other opt-in mailing

Subscribers who use Hotmail, Yahoo and similar mail addresses for receipt of the Update Newsletter should be aware that rule changes at these mail hosts may mean that, on delivery, the newsletter will be automatically moved to the JUNK ( Hotmail ) or BULK ( Yahoo ) folders.

In fairness to the hosts, this initiative was necessary because of the vast quantity of spam ( unwanted bulk mailings ) messages being issued daily.  Indeed, I find it useful myself, and use these addresses on sites where I'm interested enough to supply subscription details, but not too sure about the site.

Basically, any message you receive for which you are not the only recipient will initially be treated as potential spam, and moved to the Junk or Bulk folder.  The messages are still available for you to read, but you can get rid of all 'junk' mail with one mouse-click, whether or not you've viewed the messages.

Hotmail Users:

Click on the 'Junk Mail' option to the left, to view the messages Hotmail has classified as potential 'Junk'.  If you find a message here that is a regular mailing, which you want to continue to receive, tick the empty box beside the message header, and click on the 'This is not Junk Mail' option above.  You will be presented with another screen with two tick boxes to choose.  Click on the second option ( "This message is from a mailing list I belong to...." ) and click Next.   This is a 'once-off' operation, future mailings will be delivered directly to your 'Inbox', until you decide otherwise.

Yahoo Users:

Click on the 'Bulk Mail' option to the left, to view the messages Yahoo has classified as bulk mail. You can either use the 'Turn Spamguard off' to ensure all your messages go to the inbox ( not recommended ), or open the message from a source you trust ( such as myself! ).  Click on the 'This is not spam'  option above the message header. You will be directed to a screen with two options ( probably both ticked ).  Ensure that the second box is ticked, and click 'Continue'.  All future messages from your trusted source will be delivered to your Inbox, until you decide otherwise.

In the case of my newsletter, If you should decide that you wish to unsubscribe and not receive further update newsletters , you can do this from my main page.

I would like to say that I fully support these Mail service providers in their efforts to stamp out spam.  While it does make life a bit difficult for webmasters ( like me ) who wish to issue mailshots to genuine opt-in subscribers ( like yourself! ), you only need to take the above action once to validate the sender, and browse your Junk or Bulk folder from time to time to make sure that messages you want to receive can be re-directed to your main Inbox folder.
